It is vital that we spend time in God’s Word.

But it’s not always easy.

We read a chapter and we don’t know what to get out of it or even how to start to understand it.

I thought I could try to help you get a little something out of what you are reading by providing you with some questions to ask as you look at the text.  Good questions are a good start to understanding. Sometimes there will be more questions, sometimes less.

You can do this!

So, get a notebook, a pen, your Bible, and if you would like some help, take some time to answer the questions, and you may be surprised by all God teaches you.

Exodus 17

1. What has God done in the previous chapter?
2. What are the people doing here? How many times have they done this since they left Egypt?
3. What does Moses say they are actually doing to God? What is the connection between grumbling and testing God do you think? What does it mean to test God? Why is that so wrong?
4. What do they say was Moses’ motivation? Why is that crazy? What does that tell you about leadership?
5. What does Moses say they want to do to him?
6. What does God say to Moses to do with his staff?
7. Who does Paul say in 1 Corinthians 10 was the rock? So it is as if Moses is striking Jesus to provide water for the people. This is an illustration. What spiritual truth might it illustrate?
8. What question were the people asking and why is that question so ridiculous? What does that tell you about some of the excuses we have for our lack of faith?
9. Who comes out to fight Israel here? This is important. Remember these people because we will meet them again later in the Old Testament.
10. How did Israel win this battle? What do you think Israel was supposed to learn from this?
11. What does God promise He is going to do in verse 14?
12. Why was what Amalek doing so serious?
13. What do you learn about God and people from this chapter?
