Death, Ministry, and Other Things

So sad.A man who had been coming to our church, a refugee from the D.R.C., with six children and a wife, died on Saturday. We had just visited with him a month ago and had the opportunity to share the gospel. Someone asked me afterwards why I had been so straightforward with him when he looked so sick, and I actually wondered if I had taken the right direction myself, if I shouldn't have been quieter. I don't know, but it felt so urgent. I told the person who asked, I don't know if he'll make it through this next week. He made it a week, but not much longer. This is all real. There are people dying out there without the gospel, they are going to stand before God and we never know exactly when, and we have the message of eternal life! Now though, we have to think about how to help his family. Again, so difficult practically to know what to do. The wife barely speaks English, is in a foreign country as a refugee, she has six children under the age of fourteen, and we are just a small, financially poor church. How do we show the love of Christ in this situation? So challenged again by Jesus' words, I desire mercy and not sacrifice. What is our worship on Sunday, our listening to fine and excellent preaching, if our hearts don't break as we consider the suffering around us? Isn't the aim of all this instruction love from a pure heart? God, please help me, help our church, your church, to love the people around us the way you have loved us!
