Bible Overview Links and Resources, part 1

We are beginning a two year course in which we will seek to provide an overview of the entire Bible. I can't describe how happy working on this has made me. It is such a joy to study God's Word. The more you dive in, the deeper you find it, and the more satisfaction God produces through it!There are many people in town who are interested in learning more about the Bible, and so we hope over the years this basic foundational course will be of great help to many of them. (For more information, check out the registration link.) We want to be rigorous and yet accessible, which means I am hard at work preparing the syllabus. I just finished Genesis, and I am at around one hundred pages! No matter how hard I try, it is very difficult for me to not be thorough!Preparing the syllabus for this course means I am looking at all kinds of different articles and books, which is fun for me, and maybe helpful for you, as I thought I could share some of the overflow every once in a while.I thought I could start by sharing a book and an article and a web-site that I have found very helpful. The book is by Stephen Dempster, and so is the article actually.Dominion and Dynasty tells the story of the Old Testament, providing many insights that enlighten the text. I can't recommend it too highly! What made me think of sharing this book with you actually is the fact I recently finished reading an article Dr. Dempster wrote in which he provides a very helpful summary of the message of book of Exodus. You will definitely want to download this one for your files.I am looking forward to getting a book entitled,"What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About" to help me prepare for the Old Testament part of the overview. It's in the mail! In the meantime, I found the editor of the book has provided a number of resources on his web-site. There are lectures on the Old Testament here that are helpful and satisfying, meaning they teach you and as they teach you more about the Old Testament they stir you up to enjoy God. There are also many great article and teaching helps here as well!
