Just thinking...

I once talked with a pastor who said that his church's strategy was to reach out to the more educated and elite of the society in which he was ministering.  He was trying to explain why he didn't feel much of a burden to reach out as a church to those who weren't.   And I guess I have just been thinking about that. I don't have a problem with reaching out to the more educated and elite in society. That's obviously important.  I am just curious about it, I suppose.    Like one, does that strategy really work?  Before even talking about what the Scripture says, does that strategy really work?  This pastor's point was that if you reach out to the educated and elite then you will end up having an impact on the poor and the needy and the vulnerable.  But I am wondering if that really happens because from what I have seen of the majority of educated and elite people in the society in which I am ministering is that they are doing almost everything in their power to stay away from the poor and the needy and the vulnerable. And then second, is that strategy really in the flow of the way we find God working throughout the Scriptures.  I am definitely not going to argue that we shouldn't reach out to the educated and the elite.  I think there are people that are especially gifted for that.  And maybe even churches.  But what kind of people did God deliberately choose?  What does James say in James 2 about favoritism and how does he go about making his argument?  Who does Jesus spend time with and who does he get in trouble for spending time with?  What does Jesus say about who we should invite to dinner? Is it really all right for a church to have a laissez faire kind of attitude towards those who are especially vulnerable and needy?
