Mercy Ministry Leads to a Teaching Ministry

If the highest happiness a person can experience consists of seeing God's excellency and enjoying His love, then the greatest good you could ever do for anyone else is to attempt to help them know and enjoy that for themselves. This is why when people talk as if mercy ministry could ever be separated from a teaching ministry, or as if a mercy ministry necessarily leads people away from a teaching ministry, it really is quite difficult to process. Why would I ever get involved in mercy ministry? I assume we all can agree that at least part of the reason is because I want a person's good. And if I am engaged in mercy ministry because I want a person's good, then how could I ever not want their best good, which is to see and enjoy the glory of God? And if I ever try to help someone without caring about that, maybe it is because I am not so much motivated by a desire for their good, (after all, it doesn't make sense to say I am motivated by a desire for a person's good and not want their good) and if I am not motivated by a desire for their good, then probably we shouldn't call it mercy ministry at all.The problem then is not that mercy ministry leads away from a teaching ministry or toward the social gospel, because if it does that, it is not mercy ministry.
