On Contentment

Are you content? That is an important question for a number of reasons. First, it is a duty to be content.  Hebrews 13:5, "Be content with what you have."Second, it makes sense for Christians to be content.Hebrews 13:5, "For He has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you."Third, it is profitable to be content. 1 Timothy 6:6, "Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment."By the way, he defines the kind of contentment he is talking about later, "But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content."  He is saying that coming to the point where you are satisfied with having food and clothing is very profitable for you spiritually. Because for starters, the content man is a free man.The content man is at peace. The content man has the strength to say no to temptation. The content man is spiritually stable. The content man is able to enjoy what he does have. The content man is enable to seek first the kingdom of God. Fourth, it is a skill to be content. Philippians 4:11, "I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content."Contentment doesn't come naturally.  It didn't even come naturally to the apostle Paul.  Finally, it is difficult to be content. We have to ask ourselves whether we are content because we live in a culture that is training us in discontentment.  In fact, people are paid millions of dollars to try to produce discontentment in us.  If our own sinful desires weren't enough, we have people encouraging those desires. And so, given the importance of contentment and the spiritual benefits that come to those who are content, it makes sense for us to slow down, look deeply into our hearts, and ask, "Am I truly satisfied with God?"
