Through the Bible: Day 79, Exodus

It is vital that we spend time in God’s Word.

But it’s not always easy.

We read a chapter and we don’t know what to get out of it or even how to start to understand it.

I thought I could try to help you get a little something out of what you are reading by providing you with some questions to ask as you look at the text.  Good questions are a good start to understanding. Sometimes there will be more questions, sometimes less.

You can do this!

So, get a notebook, a pen, your Bible, and if you would like some help, take some time to answer the questions, and you may be surprised by all God teaches you.

Exodus 29

1. What does it mean to consecrate something?
2. What does this tell us about priests?
3. (So when we are called priests in the New Testament, what does this mean God has done for us?)
4. There's a whole big process for setting Aaron and his sons apart. It starts with doing what in verse 5? Priests are clothed with special garments! Again, we don't do all this today physically, but the Old Testament is providing us categories to understand concepts that will come up later in the Bible.
5. Then, what does verse 7 say they had to do?
6. This word anoint is an important word, because it becomes the basic word for Messiah. A Messiah is an anointed one. As we look at the Old Testament, priests were anointed, prophets were anointed, and kings were anointed. So, the Messiah is the anointed one really, and he is the only one who can serve as prophet, priest and king.
7. After clothing and anointing Aaron and his sons, what did they have to do in verse 10 through 14. Why did they have to do this for Aaron and his sons? What does this tell you about a possible inadequacy of these priests?
8. What did Aaron and his sons have to do in verse 10, verse 15, and verse 19? What do you think is the significance of that?
9. They kill a bull and put some of the blood on the altar and then offer up the fat, liver and kidneys on the altar, and then take the flesh of the bull and its skin and burn it outside the camp. They then take a ram, and throw its blood against the side of the altar. And then burn the ram on the altar. And then they take another ram, and take its blood and put it where?
10. How long does verse 35 say this whole ordination process take place?
11. If you were an Israelite watching this whole process, what do you think you are learning about God and about worship and about having a relationship with him?
12. Turn to Hebrews 4:14-5:4. What do we learn here about Jesus and how does this connect to what we are reading in Exodus?
13. The priests had their work cut out for them. What were they to do in verse 38 everyday? The fact that they had to make these sacrifices everyday, what was that teaching the people?
14. This is a lot of sacrificing, but what was God's plan for the tabernacle according to verse 42 through 46?
